You can resaw or shape this uniquely shaped piece to suit your needs. This wood can be turned, used for bowls, pen blanks, handles, gun stocks, musical instruments, and many other uses. Our Item 341 is 14 lbs of Ebony.

The maximum length of this piece is 37. The maximum width of this piece is 5. The maximum thickness of this piece is 4. A small seam of brown runs along this triangle-shaped piece.

There are no face splits, but there is a long split that may run the entire length of the piece, causing it to create two smaller triangles (about 1/3 of the piece would fall away). Making this negative assumption, this piece should yield some nice 1" x 1" pieces 34 in length - perhaps 4 of them plus some long thin offcuts. Note that all yield predictions are estimates only, based on what I can see from the exterior and my experience. This is also true of the color; once you cut into a piece, you may find a different color or amount of true black than what I can see at the surface.

Why is the wood in this shape? When this is harvested, the sawyer uses a chainsaw like a carving knife, cutting away the sapwood and leaving these irregular shapes. We have imported them whole, eliminating the waste common to other vendors. Trees From Eden is a supplier of exotic African hardwoods that takes a different approach to the business. At the stump in Africa, these woods cost about the same as common American species, such as Oak.

The high cost of exotics is due to the series of 10-15 middlemen who move the product from the forest in Africa to the retailer in the US. Gabon ebony wood is the most pure black of the lot, but can have occasional chocolate brown seams, especially in the middle of larger chunks. You can pay significantly more for wood that is guaranteed to be pure black throughout.
